To better equip Sri Lankan government employees and anyone who wants to receive relevant training in the subject of Geographic Information Systems, the Department of Geography at the University of Kelaniya has scheduled a series of workshops on Geoinformatics.
January 06, 2024, marked the official start of the inaugural workshop program at the Department of Geography's GIS Center. The Chief Guest was Mr. K.M.H.S. Jayalath, the commissioner for local governance of the Northwestern Province of Sri Lanka. Attending the opening ceremony were the dean of the faculty of social sciences, Professor M.M. Gunathilaka, senior Professor R.K.L.M. Dharmasiri, Head of the Geography Department, workshop coordinator Professor Nishan Sakalasooriya, Mr. Sarath Pemachandra, coordinator of the Northwestern Province's GIS project, Professor A.G. Amarasinghe, and all other staff members.
The first group of participants in the workshop series consists of 25 officers from the GIS Units of the Local Governments in the Northwestern Province.
The start date for the second session is February 3, 2024.
