The Department of Mass Communication is graced with its 4 decades of proud history. I feel this is the preeminent time to include note in to this writing as my responsibility.

The subject “Mass Communication” came in to establish in Sri Lanka along with the introduction of our department in 1973. Even a dictionary meaning for Mass Communication in Sinhala was not found. This has been mattered a lot to the board of members in first introducing to the subject affiliated to the Arts faculty in conformity with decision taken by the university Grant commission at that time in familiarizing   job oriented syllabus in to Sri Lankan university stream.  Then committee members, Professors Ediriweera Sarachchandra and M. B. Ariyapala have proposed names. Prof. Sarachchandra has proposed “Mass Information Science” while Prof. M.B Ariyapala was proposing “Mass Communication in contrast .

The word “Mass Communication “which gives an elaborated explanation to the field of media was came into inception in Sinhala Lexicon and the Sri Lankan university network.

Mahagama Sekera, Pandith W.D Amaradewa, Kalakeerthi Edwin Ariyadasa are among the pioneer visiting lecturers timely started department and we humbly content about eminent Journalists and Artistes in Sri Lanka.

The department has timely progressed courses in trilingual but   lately interrupted in progressing in Tamil and English unavoidably. Our prime intention is to optimizing human and physical resources start courses in trilingual in future.  We are committed to reach that success determinedly.   

The department of Mass Communication is currently conduct for internal degree courses such as General Degree in Mass Communication, Special Degree in Mass Communication, General Degree in Public Relation and Media Studies and Special Degree in Public Relations and Media Studies. As well as we are conducting general degree course in Mass Communication for external degree candidates.  

Moreover, the department of Mass Communication conducts three diploma courses as week-end courses, Diploma in Mass Communication, Diploma in Public Relations and Media Management, Higher Diploma in Media Management and Public Relations additionally. 

Furthermore, the Department of Mass Communication conducts four Post Graduate courses such as Masters in Mass Communication, Masters in Social Sciences, Masters in Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

Accordingly, the department of Mass Communication offers both twelve internal and external degree courses for university scholars.

The department itself has modern equipped Audio Visual Studio for practical Film, television and radio studies. A division for Mass Communication research Centre and Human Rights research Centre is set up under the department.

The department is pioneer in introducing Public Relation and media studies course to Sri Lankan universities in 2015 marking a turning point.

Setting a mile stone in Sri Lankan university history, the department is ready to unveil its premier film experience in 2018 initiated by a university. The pieces of stage dramas previously presented by Prof.Sunanda Mahendra and Prof.Ariyarathna Athugala  and tele dramas , short films and video productions done by prof. Rohana Luxman Piyadasa , Prof.Ariyarathna Athugala, Aruna Lokuliyana, Dharshana Mapa Pathirage and rest of the academic staff members  are our strength to go forward.The vision of the department is to produce a media scholar to suit the future media industry and media challengers.
