Communication of World Environmental day 2016

Department of Mass Communication University of Kelaniya with the collaboration of department of wild life conservation had organized a World Environmental day 2016. This event was held on 08th of June 2016 at the auditorium of Commerce and Management with the participation of vice-chancellor Senior Prof: Sunanda Maddhumabandara, Dr: Sumith Pilapitiya, Director head of the department wild life conseration .

The Keynote was delivered by lawyer Jagath Gunawardene. Prof: Upali Chandrasekara, Nayanaka Ranwella and Samantha Gunasekara was also Participated in this event.

One day workshop for Cyber Crime under the theme of €œInternet Crimes and the undergraduate which was held at the Ketchene Sri Pragnakirthi auditorium on 27th of July 2016.

The workshop was Organice Under the Suparvisia of Lecturer Dinithi Jayasekara and the speech was done by Mr. Roshan Chandraguptha and Mis. Samadhi De Silva of Computer Emergency Readyness Team (CERT)


A set of proposals to establish a righteous media culture in Sri Lanka submit to President

The heads of the Media institutions should be committed to fulfill their obligations to build a knowledgeable society for the betterment of the human society, President Maithripala Sirisena emphasized.

It is also the responsibility of the media to criticize and point out the shortcomings and mistakes and provide accurate information to the public for the betterment of the country.

He made these remarks participating in a ceremony, organized to submit a set of proposals to establish a righteous media culture in Sri Lanka by the Sri Lankan University Teachers Association of Communication and Media Studies, held at the National Library auditorium in Colombo, today (03).

President of the Sri Lankan University Teachers Association of Communication and Media Studies, Dr. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa presented the set of proposals to the President.

The President further said that the present Government highly value the principles of media freedom and said that in the near future the Right to Information Bill also will be passed in the Parliament.

"€œSome of the private media institutions work for an agenda of the political and cultural concepts of their owners. But it is their responsibility to use the given media freedom for the betterment of the country in a professional manner",€ President Sirisena said.


University of Kelaniya raises awareness of Digital Media

A workshop on Digital Communication Trends and Media Development in Sri Lanka€ organized by the Department of Mass Communication of the University of Kelaniya and Communication and Media Training Forum (CMTF) was held on the 11thFebruary 2016 at the auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The aim of the workshop was to raise awareness among journalists of the use of digital technology in Sri Lankan media and its practical difficulties. The opening ceremony of the event was attended by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Senior Professor Sunanda Madduma Bandara, the Chairman of Sri Lanka Telecom, Mr. P.G. Kumarasinghe, the Deans, the Head of the Department of Mass Communication, academic staff from the field of media from other universities, the academic staff of the Department of Mass Communication of University of Kelaniya, media chiefs and a large number of media representatives representing media.

Mr. M.J.R. David, former Lecturer of the Mass Media Unit of the University of Colombo, Professor Gamini Wijayarathna, the Dean (Acting) of the Faculty of Computing and Technology of the University of Kelaniya, Mr. Haridu Nanayakkara, Manager, Mobitel Company, Mr. G.A.S. Gunananda, Deputy Director, Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka, Mr. Upali Ambewela, Senior Engineering Advisor, Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, Mr. Rohan Perera, Deputy Director General (Engineering) of Sri Lanka Rupavahini Cooperation, Mr. Tharaka Mohotti, MTV/MBC Director/Engineer conducted informative lectures and the ensuing discussion was joined by journalists and academics. On this occasion, Professor Gamini Wijayarathna made a special comment on how it would be possible to overcome many difficulties related to digital technology through the newly established Faculty of Computing and Information Technology of the University of Kelaniya. Mr. Ariyarathna Athugala, Professor of Department of Mass Communication and the former Director General of the Government News Department was the coordinator of the workshop.
