Expected outcomes
· Research team of the Department of Botany, University of Kelaniya will have the opportunity to engage in research leading to the identification of new plant species with horticultural values, creating high potential plant cultivars with promising characters through modern breeding methods, and experiment new culture media for planting, thereby contributing to development of floriculture industry
· The country will have the opportunity to secure authorship of new plant cultivars with high market demand characters by virtue of classical and molecular identification
· After following the training program, participants should be able to choose suitable starting material, prepare culture media, work under aseptic conditions, modify culture media depending on the situation and obtain a large number of planning materials
· New small and medium scale entrepreneurs will be available for the country and new approaches to add a value for the floral arrangements to target local and foreign market will be identified and practiced. Large scale entrepreneurs will expand their business with the help of modern science and technology.
· The disease diagnostic facility will identify bacterial and fungal pathogens associated with the plant species using modern molecular biological tools.
