History of The Department

 

Social Statistics General Degree Programme has commenced under the Department of Economics with three senior lecturers who have trained Social Statistics as a subject.

With reference to the request from the Head of Department, Department of Economics to conduct a degree programme for the Social Statistics subject, the Faculty Board of Faculty of Social Sciences has approved the request on 4th December 1990 at the 29th Faculty Board Meeting and forwarded to the approval of council of University of Kelaniya.

The Social Statistics General Degree Programme was with three levels each with three papers. Basic Mathematics, Descriptive Statistics and Elementary Probability taught at the level one, level two consists of Mathematics for Statistics, Distribution Theory and Applied Statistics and level three consists of Sampling Theory, Operational Research and Data Processing and Computer Programming.

Social Statistics General Degree Programme has commenced under the Department of Economics in year 1991 and the Special Degree Programme for Social Statistics has initiated in year 1992 under the same department. After 26 years of excellence in providing knowledge and skills to the undergraduates in Social Statistics Special Degree Programme and General Degree Programme, the Department of Social Statistics has been established under the Faculty of Social Sciences as a new department. Dr.K.M.L.M.ManjulaGunarathna is the first Head of Department of Department of Social Statistics. The department of Social Statistics consists of three Senior Lecturers including the head of Department and two temporary lecturers at the present.
