Introduction
The Department of Sport Science and Physical Education was formally established in 2015 by a gazette notification. During this period, two degree courses (Honorary and General) are being conducted continuously. It is also the only academic institution in Sri Lanka to offer a degree program in Sport and Recreation Management. In 2018, a Diploma in Sports Management course was introduced.

As this Department is under a state university, it is constantly focused on meeting the national needs. Accordingly, the existing syllabi will be constantly updated to suit the national needs and new courses will be introduced to suit the national needs. Often in doing so, every effort is made to be flexible in the face of national interests.
Accordingly, the Diploma Course in Physical Education and Sports Management offered in this manner is designed to meet a national need. Following a request made to us by the Ministry of Education, this syllabus has been designed with their needs in mind. However, in compiling this syllabus, the needs of students outside the Ministry of Education but who are interested in this subject have also been taken into consideration. Specially, rapid demand for the human capital in the management filed in Sri Lankan sport sector has been aimed to fulfil through this syllabus.
