A Visit to the National Institute of Mental Health, Sri Lanka

On the 26th of March 2024, Sociology Special Part II students from the University of Kelaniya embarked on an enlightening journey to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Sri Lanka. This educational visit was organized under the course unit "Social Psychology" to provide students with a firsthand experience of the functions and treatments provided by NIMH for individuals with mental illness.

Led by Professor Wasantha Subasinghe, along with Lecturers Sachini Silva, Auchithya Rathnayake, and Assistant Lecturer Manujaya Eksith, the students gained valuable insights into the workings of NIMH and its significance in the realm of mental health care in Sri Lanka.

The main objective of the visit was to disseminate knowledge about the functions of NIMH and raise awareness among students about mental health issues. By witnessing the treatments and facilities provided by NIMH, students were able to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by mentally ill individuals and the importance of mental health care in society.

During the visit, students had the opportunity to interact with staff and professionals at NIMH, allowing them to gain insights into the daily operations and challenges faced by mental health care providers. Through this interaction, students were able to appreciate the dedication and commitment of the staff at NIMH in providing care and support to individuals with mental illness.

The Department of Sociology, University of Kelaniya, expresses its gratitude to NIMH for facilitating this visit and looks forward to future collaborations in promoting mental health education and awareness.
