The Department of Sociology is one of the vibrant Departments in the Faculty of Social Sciences with 30 years of landmarked historical footprints. The Department constituted in 1991. As a leading Department in the university, it manages the highest students’ enrolment under several undergraduate and postgraduate study programs. The Department is offering both internal, and open and distance learning degree programs in undergraduate studies. Also, the Department is managing the highest number of postgraduate students in the Faculty leading to MPhil and PhD degree programs. Especially, the Department conducts both Sinhala and English medium degree programs in undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs. All degree programs are equipped with practical components to provide a realistic view of societal needs and manifestation.
Today, the faculty of the Department is equipped with a high number of qualified teaching staff who has gained their doctorates from different universities in the Asian region. They have been published their scholarly outputs in local and international publications.

The Department has shown its capability and capacity in academic and research orientation by conducting several national level researches on disaster management, development-oriented action plan and evaluation, policy formation research, etc. Furthermore, the Department is providing their expertise to keep sustainable Development and reduction of poverty in Asia collaborating with global development partners. It has shown the capacity of organizing several local and international academic endeavours and tailor-made programs (Diploma course in Social work, Diploma in Corrections and Rehabilitation) to fulfil the requirements of the national and South Asian region.

The vision of the Department is “producing high quality graduates who can face any challenge in national and international levels with a sound theoretical and practical knowledge including a substantial level of experience gained”. The mission of the Department is “providing opportunities to graduands to formulate a good level of reliable and appropriate knowledge, and develop positive attitudes, values and practice in human society”.
