The Diploma in Information Technology is designed by the Department of Information Technology of Faculty of Social Sciences in pursuit of enhancing the rate of employability of the Arts graduates in Sri Lanka with regard to the emerging deficiency of the professional placements due to the majority of Arts graduates being delivered from the state universities. As the key areas of the industry are automated with the advancement of Information Technology, if a graduate possesses well trained IT skills blended with a sound knowledge, it influences the production of tech savvy graduates while fitting dynamic labor markets. This diploma is offered to nearly 1700 students enrolled to the Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Humanities of University of Kelaniya as a course without fee levying. A student will have to spend over a huge amount to acquire such a professional qualification from a private institution with a standardized reputation. In an era with an economic crisis, offering this diploma matters in satisfying aspects when considering the foundation for better demanding employment opportunities. The content will cover essential areas of Information Technology like computer science, programming, networking, database design, web developing, security, IT based Management and some aesthetic skills. Furthermore, the Diploma program extends with a sound understanding of theories related to IT and their applicability to real-world scenarios focusing on conceptual, methodological, and analytical issues while providing in-depth analysis of multidisciplinary areas relating to IT, namely Computer Systems, Office Automation, Digital Learning, Software Engineering, Graphic Designing, Video Editing, Programming, Database Management, and Web Programming while strengthening the practical and technical skills of the students. This content was outlined by resource persons who are expertise in relevant modules from five faculties namely Faculty of Science, Faculty of Commerce and Management, Faculty of Computing and Technology, Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Humanities of University of Kelaniya. The Diploma Programme will be conducted by the Department of Information Technology at Faculty of Social Sciences. The Department is equipped with one Senior Lecturer, two Computer Instructors and six Temporary Demonstrators. The lectures and practical will be conducted by reputed staff of above mentioned five faculties other than the department staff. Moreover, three computer laboratories containing 200 computers will be available for the students when following this course. Hence, the prime objective of the Diploma in IT is to bridge the gap between labor market requirements and the skills and competencies possessed by the Arts graduates as well as to produce globally employable Arts graduates while originating their interest in the IT field in a fruitful
approach.
