The Sociology Special Part II students from the University of Kelaniya recently embarked on a research-focused journey to Kanugahawewa and Rabakepuwewa in Kebithigollawe. This educational excursion was organized as part of the course unit "Advanced Research Method" to provide students with practical insights into conducting research methodically.
Under the guidance of Senior Professor K. Karunathilake, a series of workshops were conducted to prepare the students for their fieldwork. The workshops aimed to familiarize students with the research process, from planning and data collection to analysis and interpretation.
The visit spanned four days, during which students had the opportunity to engage with the local communities. An intriguing discovery was made during the visit, as residents of the selected areas claimed to be descendants of Kuweni, the wife of King Vijaya according to Sri Lankan history. This revelation added a historical and cultural dimension to the students' research experience.
The team was led by Senior Professor K. Karunathilake and included distinguished department members such as Professor D. M. Ubesekara Dissanayake, Professor Geethani Amaratunge, Lecturer Sachini N. Silva, Lecturer Auchithya Rathnayake, and Assistant Lecturer Mr. Manujaya Eksith. Their presence and guidance greatly enriched the students' learning experience.
Overall, the visit to Kanugahawewa and Rabakepuwewa was a valuable learning opportunity for the Sociology Special Part II students, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting and gain a deeper understanding of research methodology.
