Transforming Correctional Practices: Inauguration of HDCR and DCRP Batches

The Department of Sociology recently marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of the 3rd batch of the Higher Diploma in Correction and Rehabilitation for Prison Officers (HDCR) and the 6th batch of the Diploma in Correction and Rehabilitation for Prison Officers (DCRP). These programs, initiated in 2014 under the leadership of Prof. Geethani Amaratunga, aim to enhance the professional capabilities of prison officers, fostering a more effective and humane approach to correctional practices.

The inauguration, held on the 7th of April, 2024, was a momentous occasion attended by dignitaries and academic leaders. Prof. M. M. Gunatilake, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, graced the event as the guest of honor, highlighting the importance of these programs in shaping the future of correctional practices.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Praneeth Abhayasundara from the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. His speech underscored the critical role of rehabilitation in the correctional system and emphasized the need for continuous learning and professional development.

The presence of Mr. Ajith Basnayake, the Commissioner of Prisons, further emphasized the collaboration between academia and the prison service, reflecting a shared commitment to improving correctional practices. Prof. D. M. Ubesekara and Snr. Prof. K. Karunathilake also shared their insights, highlighting the importance of these programs in shaping a more rehabilitative and inclusive correctional system.

The event was attended by Snr. Lec. Anoma Rathnayake, the Head of the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education, along with the lecturers of the Department of Sociology, showcasing the interdisciplinary nature of the programs and their broader impact on society.
