Message of Head of the Department

Economics plays a central role in explaining a wide range of social phenomena and maintains strong interconnections with other academic disciplines. It primarily examines how individuals, groups, and nations allocate scarce resources to achieve economic efficiency, growth, and social welfare. Therefore, the systematic study of economics is essential for those seeking a deeper understanding of socio-economic dynamics, human behavior, and the functioning of the global economy.

The Department of Economics of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Kelaniya stands as one of the pioneering academic units of the University. Established in 1959 alongside the founding of Vidyalankara University, the Department has sustained a strong tradition of academic excellence and intellectual contribution for over six decades. Throughout its history, the Department has produced a significant number of distinguished academics and professionals who have contributed to national development and the global academic community. Notably, several members of the Department have held the prestigious position of Vice Chancellor of the University.

Aligned with the broader vision and mission of the University, the Department is committed to fostering an inclusive, dynamic, and intellectually stimulating learning environment that accommodates diverse ethno-religious communities. The Department offers a comprehensive range of academic programs, including Bachelor of Arts (BA), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Philosophy (MPhil), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Economics. These programs are carefully designed to reflect contemporary local and global economic trends, ensuring both academic rigor and practical relevance. Furthermore, the Department actively promotes student engagement through a variety of extracurricular and co-curricular activities, often organized in collaboration with student associations. These initiatives contribute to the social, cultural, and personal development of students, preparing them to become responsible and competent contributors to society.

In conclusion, the Department of Economics remains dedicated to academic excellence, research advancement, and the development of well-rounded graduates capable of addressing contemporary economic challenges at both national and global levels.
