In a testament to their exemplary contributions to the field of Geography, Professor Lal Mervin Dharmasiri, Senior Professor, Chair & Head of the Department of Geography, and Professor A.G. Amarasinghe, Director of the Research Center for Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, were recently recognized and honored during their participation in various academic programs in India. The eminent professors took part in the 6th World Congress on Disaster Management (WCDM), held in Dehradun, India, on November 28, 2023. The Congress, themed 'Strengthening Climate Action & Disaster Resilience,' brought together experts from around the globe to discuss crucial issues related to disaster management and climate change.
Professor Mervin Lal Dharmasiri, a distinguished alumnus of Pune University in India, delivered a keynote speech at the International Conference on Conservation and Management of Natural Resources for Sustainable Development. The conference, hosted by K.B. Patil University College and affiliated with P.A.H. Solapur University, Maharashtra, India, took place on December 3, 2023. His insightful address highlighted the importance of sustainable practices in natural resource management.
Adding another feather to his cap, Professor Dharmasiri was also invited as a guest of honor for the 75th Anniversary celebrations of Savitribai Phule Pune University. The Department of Geography, in collaboration with the National Association of Geographers, India (NAGI), organized an international conference in December 2023 as part of the university's Diamond Jubilee.
Notably, Professor Dharmasiri's outstanding achievements were further underscored as he was recognized as one of the best PhD products of Pune University - India.
