Higher Diploma in Disaster Management

The Higher Diploma in Disaster Management is designed to cater to mid-career professionals, government officials, private sector personnel, community leaders, and aspiring practitioners. It equips learners with advanced skills and critical thinking required to tackle emerging disaster management challenges effectively. The program emphasizes strengthening systemic resilience, integrating interdisciplinary knowledge, and enhancing adaptive capacity in disaster-prone regions.
The Higher Diploma serves as a progression from the Diploma level, providing graduates with advanced competencies and leadership capabilities. It aims to develop professionals who can:
  • Drive strategic disaster management initiatives at institutional, community, and national levels.
  • Innovate and implement sustainable disaster risk reduction practices.
  • Address the socio-economic and cultural dimensions of disaster impact.
This comprehensive program expands on foundational disaster management principles by offering in-depth exploration of topics such as disaster governance, geospatial analysis in disaster planning, climate change adaptation, and community-led risk reduction frameworks.

  • 01st Instalment: Rs. 50,000.00
  • 02nd Instalment: Rs. 30,000.00
  • 03rd Instalment: Rs. 40,000.00
  • 04th Instalment: Rs. 40,000.00

Entry Qualifications: 

Minimum admission requirement
Minimum admission requirement is to obtain at least ‘S’ Grades for all three approved subjects at the General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) examination in one sitting or an equivalent qualification. A foundation course equivalent to SLQF L 2 after a minimum of 12 years of schooling followed by passing an aptitude test, or completion of NVQ level 4 or accredited work experience or accredited prior learning followed by a corresponding cognitive bridging programme of minimum 30 credits as determined by the Senate may also be considered as equivalent qualification for admission to SLQF L 3 in a particular field of specialization.
 
G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L) Examination
  • Obtain at least three “S” grades in approved subjects in a single sitting of the G.C.E. A/L exam.
Equivalent Qualification
  • Completion of a foundation course equivalent to SLQF Level 2 after at least 12 years of schooling, plus passing an aptitude test.
  • OR completion of NVQ Level 4.
  • OR relevant work experience or accredited prior learning, with a corresponding cognitive bridging program (minimum 30 credits) as determined by the University Senate.
Other University Senate-determined Conditions
May include demonstration of ability (via interview, or aptitude test) especially if admission is competitive or if the candidate comes via a non‐standard route.
For Direct entrance (Only for the second year)
To be eligible for admission to the Higher Diploma in Disaster Management skipping the first year, a candidate must satisfy one of the following:
  1. Complete the one-year diploma in Disaster Management from the university of Kelaniya not, or any other university accepted by the UGC. (Senate approval should be obtained)
  2. Or hold an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University of Kelaniya’s Senate.
  3. In some cases, completion of SLQF Level 3 Diploma (or 30 credits at SLQF L3) in a related field may be required.
