Department of Geography Hosts Field Excursion for Development Studies First-Year Students

On October 1, 2024, the Department of Geography at the University of Kelaniya organized a full-day field excursion for first-year students enrolled in the Development Studies General program. The excursion was led by Prof. Nishan Sakalasooriya, along with Lecturers Chesika Kanchana, Lecturer K. Nishanthi, Lecturer Mrs. Apsara K.Dhanasekara, Lecturer Mrs. Wathsala Gunathilake and Assistant Lecturer Yalindu Jayaweera, Assistant Lecturer Mihirini providing students with hands-on experience in urban planning, land development, and sustainable urban management.


The excursion included visits to several key locations:

  • Field Visit to Urban Development Authority (UDA)

The students visited the Urban Development Authority (UDA), where they were welcomed by Deputy Director General Mr. Lalith Wijerathne, along with Assistant Director of Town Planning Ms. Sukhitha Ranasinghe and Town Planner Ms. Chuleshi Warshani. The session focused on the role of the UDA in promoting sustainable urban planning to address Sri Lanka's growing urban challenges. Key topics included managing overcrowding, infrastructure development, and the importance of balancing environmental, social, and economic factors for sustainable growth.

  • Field Visit to Diyasaru Park, SLLDC

At Diyasaru Park, students were hosted by H L Prasanga (Chief Engineer), H P D Asanka Weerasinghe (Engineer), K R Ranoshi Siripala (Ecologist), S.A.D.V.K. Wijesundara (Enforcement Officer) under the guidance of GM and DGM (WM) of SLLDC.

The visit aimed to deepen students' understanding of land development regulations and urban wetland management. Discussions revolved around the importance of adhering to land development regulations, managing illegal construction, and the critical role of urban wetlands in flood control and biodiversity conservation. The visit also included a tour of a local pumping station, showcasing sustainable urban water management practices.

Additional Visits to Diyatha Uyana and Port City

The students concluded their excursion with visits to Diyatha Uyana and the Port City project. These locations provided a real-world perspective on Sri Lanka's ongoing urban development initiatives and future prospects for sustainable growth.


The field excursion provided students with invaluable insights into the complexities of urban planning and sustainable development in Sri Lanka, enhancing their theoretical knowledge with practical, real-world experiences.
