Animal risk assessment survey in Sooriyawewa DS division

Human and wildlife conflict has become a pressing issue in recent years. Recognizing its significance, Senior Professor and Chair Lal Mervin Dharmasiri Head Department of Geography, initiated a field survey in Sooriyawewa DS division to identify the animal risks in the area. This initiative was collaborated by Sooriyawewa Divisional Secretariat office and several other government and nongovernment bodies as key stakeholders. The data collection was conducted on the 25th of February 2025 by academic staff members and students in the Department of Geography followed by a stakeholder meeting on the same day to discuss findings and validate stakeholder perspectives. Representing the occasion, the Assistant Divisional Secretary, Assistant Director National Insurance Scheme, and Chairmen of the area “Govijana Samithi” shared their views and experiences related to the Human Wildlife Conflicts. Further, the University of Kelaniya developed a risk map based on the feedback received. Also, students presented their findings during the stakeholder meeting. The Survey has identified the Eastern Half of the Sooriyawewa DS division has the highest risk when comparing the other areas. Especially animal species like elephants, monkeys, peacocks, wild boars, rats, and Giant Squirrels, etc. were identified as the key animals that were threatened by the cultivations in the Sooriyawewa DS division. Considerable losses have been reported from animal damage and debatable answers were provided by the respondents when inquiring about the contribution of government officials in terms of mitigating the animal threats. This initiative marks a crucial step in identifying risk and addressing human-wildlife conflict in the Sooriyawewa region, paving the way for informed decision-making and collaborative solutions.
