Welcome to the Department of Library and Information Science at Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya. We started our journey in the year of 1973. Over the last four decades, we have grown our expertise and competence in the core Library and Information Management curriculum and research. As the founder of the Library and Information Science Education at the University of Kelaniya, we value our intellectual capital and utilize traditional as well as contemporary ways and means for the comprehensive development of our student’s personality.

The Palm Leaf Manuscript Study and Research Library
he Palm Leaf Manuscript Study and Research Library, under the Faculty of Social Sciences engaged in digital preservation of manuscript heritage of the country and provide facilities for the scholars to study and research on Palm Leaf Manuscripts. It was declared open 08th December 2010. The main purpose of the PLMSR Library copy write and digitalize and preserve the palm leaf manuscripts. However, this library has copied and digitization more than 600,000 manuscript soft copies (digital copies) up to date, and preserved 350+ physical manuscripts from island wide donations. This digital and physical book collection includes the thripitaka, buddihism, attakathas, teekas, literature and various kind of medication, astrological and black magic manuscripts. Also this library provide the lot of information for undergraduates, internal and external researchers, foreign researchers, book editors and etc. Specially, some final year students in the university finalize their thesis from our manuscript details. Fifteen students have already completed their thesis through this library up to date. However, this is the first and only one library in the university level about Island wide Palm Leaf digitalization.
Our Services
Research Assistance
Research assistants are employed by research institutes to assist with academic or private research. The primary responsibility of a research assistant is to provide support to either a research fellow or a research team, through collecting, analyzing and interpreting data.Institutes which use research assistants include universities, research centers (e.g., Palm leaf manuscripts and Research Library, University of Kelaniya) and private organizations. Research assistants usually operate on a temporary basis, though permanent positions exist. In an academic setting, research assistants work under the supervision of research fellows.
Preservation
“The preservation and conservation of records is the principal function of an archives. It preserves records, so that they would be safety available for coming generations. Secondly, it conserves them against physical damage from Fire, Water, Rodents, Dust, Mildew, Insects, Pilfering, Mischief and other destructive agencies, Human as well as Nature and Animals” (Wimalarathne, 1978). Specially, PLMSR (Palm leaf manuscripts and Research Library) is making a space for investigate to next generation about valuable intangible cultural heritage. This is a sustainable attempt.

Audiovisual services include motion picture production and distribution services,
motion picture projection services, radio and television services, radio and television
transmission services, and sound recording.
