Dean's Message - Faculty of Social Sciences
Welcome to the Faculty of Social Sciences, which is the largest faculty in the university in terms of the number of students. Our faculty, which was established in 1981/82, has a long tradition dating back to the prestigious Vidyalankara University, where it began as part of the Faculty of Arts before evolving into the vibrant faculty that we are today.
Our prestigious faculty takes pride in compiling a distinguished and eclectic mix of academic researchers and industry practitioners, thereby crafting an engaging environment wherein the rich traditions of the past melt seamlessly with the revolutionary developments of the future. In our commitment to excel in traditional disciplines, we remain focused on key areas such as History, Archaeology, Geography, Philosophy, Economics, and Sociology, generating a solid framework for education. Furthermore, we are leading the way in spearheading new subject areas that hold significance in today's world, such as Mass Communication, Library & Information Science, and Sport Science & Physical Education. In fact, our esteemed faculty is professionally proud to be the very first in the whole island nation of Sri Lanka to establish specialized university departments in Mass Communication and Sport Science & Physical Education. This very achievement unequivocally demonstrates our absolute dedication to both scholarly advancement and professional relevance of our programs.
As Dean, it is a profound honor for me to lead and direct a dedicated faculty that not only holds intellectual rigor in high esteem but also actively addresses and adjusts to the evolving needs and demands of our society.
