Inauguration of the Diploma in Library and Information Science Programme at the University of Kelaniya

The Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya, inaugurated the Diploma in Library and Information Science Programme at the University of Kelaniya, marking an important milestone in the Department’s contribution to professional education in the field of library and information science.
The inauguration ceremony commenced with the welcome address delivered by the Senior Professor M. K. Weerasinghe, who highlighted the importance of professional training in developing competent library and information professionals to meet contemporary information needs.
Following this, Professor M. M. Gunathilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, addressed the gathering and emphasized the role of academic programmes in strengthening knowledge dissemination, information literacy and lifelong learning within society.
A special address on the Department of Library and Information Science was delivered by Senior Professor W. A. Weerasooriya, who outlined the academic vision, scope and future direction of the discipline, highlighting its relevance in the digital and knowledge-driven era.
The keynote speaker was introduced by Lecturer Ven. Bopeththa Somananda Thero, after which the keynote address was delivered by Senior Professor Petric Rathnayaka. In his address, Professor Rathnayaka emphasized the importance of reading in intellectual development, critical thinking and the cultivation of an informed society.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Senior Lecturer Dr. Priyanwada Wanigasooriya, Head of the Department of Library and Information Science, expressing gratitude to all contributors and participants who supported the successful conduct of the programme.
The event was attended by Mr. Sarath Nanda Kumara, Director of Library and Museum, National Education Institution, Mr. Sarath Perera, Visiting Lecturer of the Department of Library and Information Science, academic staff members of the department and students. The inauguration reaffirmed the University of Kelaniya’s commitment to advancing professional education and strengthening the library and information science sector in Sri Lanka.
