BA in Library and Information Science (External)

The Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS), established in 1973 at University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, with a view to cater human resource requirements in Library an Information Science (LIS) primarily introducing Bachelors and postgraduate programs. Realizing the dire need of providing professional education, a separate study program started in 1976 leading to a Diploma of three-year duration aiming at catering supporting staff in the sector. Presently there are three levels spreading three years of this professional program named Diploma level 1, Diploma and Higher Diploma. With the aim of enhancing the aptitudes of Higher Diploma holders, the Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS) has designed a separate degree program. The DLIS with am of developing competencies of these Higher Diploma holders, a separate Degree program has already been designed with the provisional approval of University Grants Commission, recommended approved by the Faculty Board of Social Sciences, CULTEC, Senate and the Council of University of Kelaniya.         
 
The aim of this proposed Bachelor of Arts in Library and Information Science (BA Library & Inf. Sc.) is to develop competencies of the supporting and paraprofessional staff those who have a acquired a degree level qualification in the fields of Library and Information Science, Information Management and Library Technologies being the emerging branches of Librarianship. Among the categories of conventional and modern resources, the information has been considered as a leading resource in the context of knowledge society. Information collection, organization, management, analysis, synthesis, interpretation, dissemination and evaluation are the fundamental facets in Library and Information Management. In the information science and management domain, one of the salient components is information, digital literacies and AI technologies. Through this degree program, it is expected to inculcate the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors of learners and practitioners presently working at Library and Information Science sector. More attention will be paid for developing Library Technology skills and capabilities through this degree program, which is a paramount requirement for a degree program like this for delivering the best Library and Information service for the clientele, particularly for the country like Sri Lanka as one of the emerging economies in the region.

  • To provide a sound theoretical knowledge and exposure in information Science
  • To improve pragmatic and mundane skills in order to improve decision-making capabilities in any information and knowledge environment.
  • To inculcate managerial competencies for planning and delivering information services for the user communities aiming at human and national development.
  • To foster higher-order thinking, analytical, and synthesizing skills, enabling adaptation to changing scenarios and environments.

Broad Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Library and Information Science Module, every student will be able to describe the system of libraries and information centers. The students will be able to manage the traditional and digital libraries in handling the issues at the service points independently. The student will be able to use library automation software and work in a digital and any virtual environment.

Admission criteria and proposed student intake

To be eligible for entry into this external study program leading to Bachelor of Arts in Library and Information Science, applicants must fulfill the following requirements.

Passed three subjects at the GCE Advanced Level examination

and

Be a permanent employee attached to a recognized library or information center in the government or private sector, with at least one year of work experience in the library or information center.

Students will not be selected based on Z score, since it is expected that applicants would have sat for the GCE Advanced Level examination in different years. If there are more applicants than available places, selection will be based on interviews of all eligible applicants.

Those who fulfill the above criteria and have obtained the Higher Diploma in Library and Information Science awarded by the University of Kelaniya not more than 10 calendar years prior to the year of calling applications, will be eligible for direct entry into the 3rd year of study.
