A Message from Head of The Department
Welcome to the Department of Library and Information Science at Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya. We started our journey in the year of 1973. Over the last four decades, we have grown our expertise and competence in the core Library and Information Management curriculum and research. As the founder of the Library and Information Science Education at the University of Kelaniya, we value our intellectual capital and utilize traditional as well as contemporary ways and means for the comprehensive development of our student’s personality.

Diploma in LIS
The Department of Library Science and Information Science of University of Kelaniya prepares LIS Diploma holders who are marketable, both nationally and internationally.
Higher Diploma in LIS
The higher diploma study program is designed to prepare students for entry level and the leadership positions in a variety of library and information environments.
Diploma in IMT
DLIS being the pioneer institution of the discipline of Information management in the university system in Sri-Lanka intends to commence the Diploma in Information Management and Technology programme.
MA / MSSc Degree
MSSc program is designed for developing and delivering high-level competencies among the personnel who are serving and those who are expecting to serve in the library and information management feild in Sri Lanka or abroad.
Department of Library and Information Science
The Department of Library and Information Science was established in 1973 with the aim of creation and sharing of knowledge in Library and Information Science. The Department strives for excellence in the field of Library and Information Management through innovation, research, and dissemination of knowledge and capacity building for socio-economic development of the nation, Asia, and beyond. The Department further aim to provide an advanced knowledge, skills, attitudes, mind-set, and paradigm to the learners, to provide each learner with an opportunity to become competent librarian/information manager/worker and technology literate person in an effective and social manner, to promote quality research culture by providing both theoretical and practical knowledge, and to strengthen national information industry for effective decision making, problem solving, and for serving relevant information to client.
