Course Aims:

Intended Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate their aptitude and analyze the history, growth and types of libraries, library profession and related themes.

Course Content: (Main topics, Sub topics)

History and evolution of libraries: Major libraries in the world, ancient and modern with special reference to Sri Lanka; Historical bibliography: ancient library materials with special emphasis on ancient writing tradition and systems of Sri Lanka; In depth studies of types of libraries: national, special, public, academic: university, school, college and other types of libraries and their objectives and functions; Library profession, professional ethics; Professional Associations and Institutions: national and international; Library education with special reference to Sri Lanka.
