Launch of the Telefilm “Bara Yakaḍa”

The much-anticipated telefilm “Bara Yakaḍa”, produced by the students of the 2019/20 batch of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya, and directed by Senior Lecturer Darshana Sampath Somaratne at the Department of Mass Communication, was successfully launched on March 24, 2025 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya.

The event was graced by the presence of Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Senior Lecturer Wijayananda Rupasinghe, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, along with the academic staff members of the department; Senior Lecturer Anoma Rathnayaka, former Head of the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education; Lecturer Sampath Perera from the Department of Drama, Cinema and Television; Mr. Suresh Subramaniam, President of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka;  Mr. Varuna Galkanda, Production Head of Sports Production & Digital Content, Monara TV; Mr. Ishara Thilakaratne, Brand Manager at Hatton National Bank; and students of the University of Kelaniya.

 

 

Workshop on 'Strategic Public Relations Planning and Campaigning' Organized by Public Relations and Media Management Students' Association

The workshop on “Strategic Public Relations Planning and Campaigning,” organized by the Public Relations and Media Management Students' Association of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on March 25, 2025 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences. This initiative was part of a broader workshop series aimed at enhancing the professional competencies of Public Relations and Media Management students, equipping them with industry-relevant skills for their future careers. The workshop focused on strategic PR planning and campaign execution in collaboration with PR Wire, a leading public relations agency in Sri Lanka. Experts from PR Wire provided valuable insights into PR planning and campaign management, sharing real-world case studies and best practices to offer students a practical understanding of the industry. The expert panel from PR Wire included Ms. Anjuu Bakshani, Associate Director-PR Wire; Mr. Supun Hettiarachchi, Director-Media Wire; Mr. Chamindu Jananath, Lead-Digital Wire; Ms. Sachintha Peries, PR Manager; Ms. Rishanya Suheinie, Senior PR Executive; Ms. Lakshani Perera, Senior PR Executive; and Ms. Nipuni Perera, Manager-Talent & Culture. Senior Lecturer Wijayananda Rupasinghe, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, along with the academic staff members of the department also graced the event.

 

 

University of Kelaniya and Kanazawa University Strengthen Academic Collaboration

The University of Kelaniya and Kanazawa University, Japan, marked another milestone in their long-standing academic partnership with a successful sixth annual meeting on March 25, 2024. The event, held at the Vice-Chancellor’s office, included a formal discussion with Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, focusing on the progress of collaborative initiatives between the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education, University of Kelaniya, and Kanazawa University. Tetsuya Sagawa, Associate Professor Megumi Honjo, and Dr. R. R. N. A. B. W. M. Rasindu Upanali Galagoda from Kanazawa University engaged in an in-depth dialogue with the Vice-Chancellor, emphasizing their plans and contributions during their current visit. Dr. Nilantha Ramanayaka, Head of the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education, further moderated the discussion. As a direct outcome of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two institutions, the Japanese delegates conducted two academic sharing sessions in collaboration with the Research Centre for Social Sciences (RCSS) on the same day. Chaired by Dr. Nilantha Ramanayaka, Head of the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education, these sessions provided valuable insights into secondary education in Japan and the international student experience at Kanazawa University. The first session by Associate Professor Megumi Honjo focused on secondary education in Japan, offering an in-depth look at its structure, challenges, and best practices. The second session by Dr. Galagoda provided an overview of international student life at Kanazawa University, sharing experiences and opportunities available for students pursuing higher education in Japan. The presentations emphasized the significance of the knowledge-sharing sessions, which provided Sport and Recreation Management undergraduates with valuable insights into secondary education in Japan and the international student experience at Kanazawa University. The discussions particularly benefited Sport and Recreation Management undergraduates, broadening their perspectives on global educational practices and student mobility opportunities. The program concluded positively, with appreciation extended to Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the RCSS for supporting international academic collaborations. The continued partnership between the University of Kelaniya and Kanazawa University remains instrumental in enhancing research, education, and student development in sports management and physical education. The events were graced by the presence of Dr. Nilantha Ramanayake, Head of the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education, along with the department's academic staff: Dr. Jayantha Kalansooriya, Dr. Charika Wickramarathne, Dr. Hashi Peiris, Senior Lecturer Ms. Anoma Rathnayaka, and Senior Lecturer Ms. Deepika Wehigaldeniya.

 

Artistic Workshop on Conversational Singing Held at the University of Kelaniya

An artistic workshop on conversational singing, organized by the Department of Library and Information Science Student Association, was successfully held on the 8th of March 2025 at the Sri Dharmaloka Hall, University of Kelaniya.

The workshop aimed to develop various skills among participants, including creativity, teamwork, communication, etc.

Mr. Kithsirimevan Jayasena, Director of TalentAsia, and Mr. Nishantha Kularathne, along with the TalentAsia team, conducted the programme for university undergraduates.

The inauguration occasion was graced by Prof. Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Dr. Priyanwada Wanigasooriya, Head of the Department of Library and Information Science; Senior Lecturer Nadeeka Rathnabahu, coordinator of the program; and Senior Lecturer Dr. K. R. N. Harshani, Senior Lecturer Dilhani Munasinghe, and Assistant Lecturer Tharaka Sandapali from the Department of Library and Information Science.

 

Official Presentation of the Book “Aparājita 67” to the Vice-Chancellor

The book “Aparājita 67,” authored by Ms. M. K. A. Anoma Rathnayaka, Senior Lecturer (Grade II) in the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,

was officially presented to Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya. The presentation took place on the 17th of March 2025 at the Vice-Chancellor’s Office.

The book explores the deeper significance of sports beyond mere competition, emphasizing its broader impact on society. It sheds light on the true essence of sports, highlighting their role in shaping individuals and communities in today's world, where victory is often seen as the sole objective.
