Screening and Discussion of CPBR Documentaries Held at University of Kelaniya

The screening and discussion of four powerful documentaries: Aatta KaariBig SistersKhalli Walli, and Mannar, produced by the Centre for Peace Building and Reconciliation (CPBR) under the “IRIS SISTERS” project, was successfully held on June 26, 2025, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya. The event was organized under the theme “Film Screening for Dialogue, Dialogue for Action, Action for Change.”

The documentary Aatta Kaari was directed by Mafahira Mansoor, Nadah Razeli, and Showthamini Shanthakumar, while Big Sisters was directed by Janani Karunarathna, Oneli Wanix, Sahasra Shehani, Saumi Sandupama, and Tharushi Maheshika. Anjalee Thilakarathna, Chanu Peiris, Prabhasha Charithangi, Oshadi Thilakarathna, and Sakunthala Dewabhashi directed Khalli Walli, while Rasathurai Thivya, Ishaq Fareena, Fathima Hasmiya, Nagomi Dias, Archana Figurado were the directors of Mannar.

The event was organized by the Department of Philosophy of the University of Kelaniya and was graced by the presence of Retired Professor Jayantha Seneviratne, former academic in the Department of Philosophy, and Founder and current President of the CPBR.

Also in attendance were Professor Semasinghe Wanninayake, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Dr. Manoji Harischandra, Head of the Department of Philosophy; Professor Gamini Hapuarachchi of the Department of Philosophy; as well as the heads of departments within the Faculty of Social Sciences. The academic staff members of the Department of Philosophy and a large number of students also participated, contributing to an engaging and thoughtful discussion following the screenings.

Professor Xu Baofeng Visits University of Kelaniya

The Second South Asian Sinologists Conference and China–Sri Lanka Scholars Civilizational Dialogue was held in Sri Lanka from June 12 to 13, 2025, with the aims of deepening cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and South Asian countries, promoting Sinology research, and encouraging mutual learning among civilizations.

Professor Xu Baofeng, Dean of the Belt and Road (Global South) Research Institute of Beijing Language and Culture University and Director of the World Sinology Center, visited Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya; Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, Registrar of the University of Kelaniya; and members of the Faculty of Social Sciences, on June 13, 2025. The discussion was held at the Senate Room of the University.

The delegation included scholars from Shandong University of Science and Technology, China, and Chongqing Normal University China; two representatives from the University of Dhaka and North South University, Bangladesh; three scholars from India representing Visva-Bharati University, University of Delhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru University; one representative from the National University of Modern Languages, Islamabad, Pakistan; the Director of the Confucius Institute at Tribhuvan University, Nepal; and the Director of the Traditional Hospital Administration of the Ministry of Health of Nepal.

On behalf of the World Sinology Center, Professor Xu Baofeng expressed sincere gratitude to the Sri Lanka-China Collaboration Association and the University of Kelaniya for their support in organizing the Second South Asian Sinologists Conference. Professor Xu Baofeng looks forward to deepening cooperation and jointly exploring the development of Sinology in South Asia. Ms. Huang Yuting, Deputy Director of the Office of the World Sinology Center; Ms. Qu Yuanmeng, Project Coordinator at the World Sinology Center; and Dr. Kumari Jayasooriya, represented the Centre for Chinese Studies, Department of Modern Languages, University of Kelaniya.

Certificate Awarding Ceremony for the 10th Batch of the Diploma in History 2022

The Certificate Awarding Ceremony for the 10th Batch of the Diploma in History 2022, organized by the Department of History, University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on June 15, 2025, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya.

The event was graced by the presence of Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, as the chief guest, while Emeritus Professor U. B. Karunananda honoured the ceremony as the keynote speaker.

Accordingly,14 students received diploma certificates during the event. Further, the event witnessed the participation of academic staff members of the Department of History, students, and their family members.

54th Quarterly Meeting of the SLFUE Held at the University of Kelaniya

The Department of Economics of the University of Kelaniya hosted the 54th quarterly meeting of the Sri Lanka Forum of University Economists (SLFUE) on 13th June 2025 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Senior Professor Nilanthi Renuka De Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, graced the occasion as the chief guest. Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Professor W. M. Semasinghe, Head of the Department of Economics; Professor Lalithasiri Gunaruwan, Founder of the SLFUE; and university economists across the country gathered to the occasion.

The meeting was preceded by a technical workshop, a keynote speech and the pre-review of the Journal of Economic Research (SLJER) Vol.12, No.2. Dr. Ganeshan Wignaraja, the Professorial Fellow in Economics and Trade at Gateway House in Mumbai and a Visiting Senior Fellow at ODI Global in London, delivered the Keynote Speech on “Geopolitics, Global Trade Policy Uncertainty and South Asia’s Trade Architecture”. A comprehensive pre-review of the next volume of the SLJER by Professor M. M. Gunatilake. The workshop on the use of NVivo software, a powerful tool widely utilized in qualitative data analysis, was conducted by Dr. Nilantha Ramanayake, Head of the Department of Sport Science & Physical Education, at the IT Lab of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Additionally, the event witnessed the participation of the academic staff members of the University of Kelaniya. 

Inauguration Ceremony for the 6th Batch of the Higher Diploma in Communication and Public Relations 2025

The inauguration ceremony for the 6th Batch of the Higher Diploma in Communication and Public Relations 2025, offered by the Department of Mass Communication, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on June 15, 2025, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

An insightful keynote speech titled “Public Relations, Communication and Tradition,” was delivered by Emeritus Professor Chandrasiri Rajapksha, during the event.

Further, the ceremony was graced by the presence of Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, as the chief guest.
