Expert Insights on Publishing with Springer: Dr. Uday Chatterjee Leads Academic Session at University of Kelaniya

Renowned academic and Springer Nature Editor, Dr. Uday Chatterjee, delivered an engaging and informative session on “Key Insights, Hints and Tips for Research Paper and Book Publication with Springer” at the University of Kelaniya on April 29, 2025. The event was organised by the Research Centre for Social Sciences (RCSS), Faculty of Social Sciences, and was held at the Faculty Board Room.

Dr. Chatterjee, who serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography, Bhatter College, Dantan (Vidyasagar University), West Bengal, India, is also an Editor and Book Series Editor at Springer Nature. His session offered valuable guidance on the step-by-step process of publishing with Springer, submission protocols and manuscript preparation, understanding copyright, royalties, and Open Access policies, and expanding global publishing opportunities for scholars, with a focus on increased contributions from South Asian academics.

The event commenced with a Welcome Address by Professor A. G. Amarasinghe, Director of RCSS and a special address was delivered by Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, highlighting the pivotal role of academic publishing in knowledge dissemination and institutional visibility.

Following the session, Dr. Uday Chatterjee paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, on April 30, 2025. Held at the Vice-Chancellor’s office, the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss future academic collaborations and to strengthen ties between the University of Kelaniya and international publishing platforms such as Springer Nature. Moreover, the occasion was graced by the presence of Professor A. G. Amarasinghe. 

 

 

Annual Gold Medal Established in Memory of Prof. Kamal Karunanayake at University of Kelaniya

The Department of Political Science has decided to award a gold medal to the best academic performing student of the Political Science honours degree programme in each academic year at the University's general convocation. This gold medal is awarded in memory of the late Professor Kamal Karunanayak, who was an eminent scholar in Political Science and Economics in Sri Lanka.

Prof. Kamal Karunanayake, as Professor and the head of the department (1999-2002), initiated several programmes to enhance the academic level of the department at the national and international levels. Further, Prof. Karunanayake has extended his service as a researcher,  scholar and a consultant in several national and international institutions.

As an initiative stage, the wife of Prof. Kamal Karunanayake, Mrs. Kusum Karunanayake, offered a financial donation to the University on the 28th of April 2025 at the Vice Chancellor’s office to award the gold medal annually.

Further, a felicitation volume for Prof. Kamal Karunanayake was also launched on the same day. This felicitation volume was edited by the department editorial board, headed by the Senior Lecturer Mrs. Yamuna Niranjanee Mendis.

Senior Prof. Nilanthi R. de Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya; Prof. M. M. Gunathilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Prof. Osantha N. Thalpawila, Head of the Department of Political Science; Mrs. Kusum Karunanayake; and the academic staff of the Department of Political Science joined graced the  occasion.

 

 

Celebrating the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace – 2025 at the University of Kelaniya

The Department of Sport Science and Physical Education, University of Kelaniya, took the initiative to celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) on April 3rd, 2025, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Globally, IDSDP is observed annually on April 6th, and for 2025, the theme is "Leveling the Playing Field: Sport for Social Inclusion."

To mark the occasion, the Department organized a thought-provoking lecture series featuring three distinguished speakers. Senior Lecturer Oshadhi Herath from the Department of Philosophy delivered a lecture on “Peacebuilding and Its Contemporary Challenges,” while Professor Nishan Sakalasooriya from the Department of Geography spoke on “Human Development and Its Challenges.” Dr. Nilantha Ramanayaka, Head of the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education addressed the theme of the year with a presentation on “Leveling the Playing Field: Sport for Social Inclusion.”

The event was organized by students from the Sport and Recreation Management (SRMG) degree program under the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education, branded as "An SRMG Event."

Additionally, the event witnessed the presence of the academic staff members of the university, including the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education, and students.

 

 

Workshop on 'AI for Future Career Development' organized by Public Relations and Media Management Students' Association

The Public Relations and Media Management Students' Association of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya, successfully hosted the 'AI for Future Career Development' workshop on April 1st, 2025, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The workshop was organized to provide insights on using AI technology to develop a future career for undergraduates at the Department of Mass Communication. This initiative was the third workshop of a broader workshop series aimed at enhancing the professional competencies of Public Relations and Media Management students.

The event featured two distinguished resource persons specializing in AI-driven career paths. Mr. K. D. Jayakody, a Software Engineer and Content Creator, led the first session on 'Using AI for Educational Purposes, offering valuable insights into AI's role in academic and professional learning. Mr. Kalana Sugeeshwara, a social media content creator and freelance graphic designer, conducted the second session on 'AI-Assisted Content Creation for Social Media,' sharing practical applications of AI in digital content development.

The workshop witnessed the presence of lecturers from the Public Relations and Media Management degree program, along with the undergraduates of the department. The engaging sessions provided students with firsthand knowledge and industry perspectives on integrating AI into their future careers.

 

 

The Official Launch of the Book “Rudura Nodarana Aňdura”

The novel The Dark Holds No Terrors by Shashi Deshpande, an Indian Sahitya Akademi Award-winning author, has been translated into Sinhalese as Rudura Nodarana Aňdura by Professor Dilma Thushari Koggalage of the Department of History, University of Kelaniya. The book was officially launched on March 27, 2025, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya. The event was organized by the Department of History, University of Kelaniya.

On this occasion, award-winning veteran writer Kathleen Jayawardena and Mr. Dhamma Dissanayake, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Political Science, University of Colombo, delivered special lectures.

The event was further graced by the presence of the distinguished guests, including Senior Professor Sudath R.D. Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science; Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Professor Bandara Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies; Dr. Sudath Senarath, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; and the academic staff of the Department of History, University of Kelaniya.
