A beach cleanup project launched by the Department of Geography, University of Kelaniya

A beach cleanup was organized by the Department of Geography, University of Kelaniya on the 13th of February 2023 from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm at Wellawatta beach.

It was held in celebration of World Wetlands Day which falls on the 2nd of February.

The theme of the project was "Mihikatha Hedakala Sonduru Bima; Theth Bima", while the main objective of this beach cleanup was to Secure wetlands which are some of the most important parts of the ecosystem.

Members of the academic staff and over 70 undergraduates of the Department of Geography took part in this event.

Seminar on Celebrating Longstanding Bilateral Relations between Sri Lanka and Indonesia

A seminar was organized by the International Studies Student’s Association (ISSA) of the Department of International Studies, University of Kelaniya in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, Colombo, Sri Lanka.

It was held on the 16th of February 2023 at the auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

This seminar provided a great opportunity for the audience to better understand the significance of bilateral relations between the two countries.

The event was graced by H. E. Dewi Gustina Tobing, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia, Colombo, Sri Lanka as the Chief Guest while Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice - Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya participated as the Guest of Honor. Prof. M. M. Gunathilake, Dean – Faculty of Social Sciences, Senior Prof. S. R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean – Faculty of Science, Senior Prof. N. A. K. P. J. Seneviratne, Dean – Faculty of Graduate Studies, Dr. Chaminda Abeysinghe, Head – Department of International Studies were also present at the event.

MoU Signed Between the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education of the University of Kelaniya and the Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation (SLTF)

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, and the Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation (SLTF)

on the 13th of February 2023 at the Senate Room of the university.

The objective of signing this MoU with the SLTF was to share expert knowledge and resources between the two parties and to promote a healthy lifestyle among the community.

Present at the occasion were Cadre Chair and Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, Registrar - University of Kelaniya, Prof. M. M. Gunathilake, Dean - Faculty of Social Sciences, Ms. M. K. A. Anoma Rathnayaka, Head - Department of Sport Science and Physical Education, Mr. Chaminda Punchihewa, Chairman - Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation, and K. A. R. C. S. Alahakoon, Secretary General - Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation, Ms. Deepika Wehigaldeniya, Coordinator of the MoU, and members of the academic staff of the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education.

Independence Print Exhibition held successfully at the University of Kelaniya

The Independence Print Exhibition jointly organized by the International Studies Students' Association (ISSA) of the Department of International Studies, University of Kelaniya in collaboration with the Awarelogue Initiative

was held on the 7th of February 2023, at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya.

It was a curated exhibition of newspapers from independence, drawn from the L. S. W. Pathirathne Collection. Curated by Dr. George I. H. Cooke, the initiator of the Awarelogue Initiative, this exhibition highlighted some of the key aspects connected with independence.

The event was honored by the presence of Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Prof. M. M. Gunathilake, Dean - Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Sudath R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean - Faculty of Science, Dr. Chaminda Abeysinghe, Head -Department of International Studies, and Mr. George Cooke - Initiator of the Awarelogue Initiative.
