The Launching of the Academic Festschrift and the Felicitation Ceremony of Professor Emeritus Ariyarathna Athugala of the Department of Mass Communication

The felicitation ceremony and launching of the academic festschrift of Professor Emeritus Mr. Ariyarathna Athugala of the Department of Mass Communication was held on 15th February at the Faculty of Social Sciences Auditorium.

Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, and Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences expressed their congratulations to Professor Emeritus Mr. Ariyarathna Athugala. Professor Emeritus Mr. Sunanda Mahendra of the Department of Mass Communication, Senior Lecturer Mr. Dhamma Dissanayake of the University of Colombo, and Professor Emeritus Mr. Sena Nanayakkara of Rajarata University also delivered their expressions.

Senior Lecturer Mr. Wijayananda Rupasinghe, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, and Senior Lecturer Mr. Aruna Lokuliyana of the Department of Mass Communication presented a special souvenir to Professor Emeritus Mr. Ariyarathna Athugala and Senior Lecturer Ms. Samanthika Priyadarshani, of the Department of Mass Communication presented the “Athugala Festschrift” to him. In addition, a documentary film directed by the Lecturer Ms. Ileka Ruwanpathirana was also shown on the academic and artistic life of Professor Emeritus Mr. Ariyarathna Athugala. Appreciating the services of Professor Emeritus Mr. Ariyarathna Athugala, Commissioner Mr. Niroshan Thambawita also presented a special souvenir on behalf of the Sri Lanka Press Council. Deans, Heads of the Departments, Lecturers, Non-Academic Staff, and Students of the University of Kelaniya as well as Lecturers from other universities participated in this event. The participation of artists representing the field of arts was exceptional.

A Scholarly Discussion on Documentary Minarets

The documentary “Minarets”, an exploration of the music and song traditions of the Sri Lankan Muslims by Nadya Perera was screened on 12th February 2024 at the Faculty of Social Sciences Auditorium. The Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya organized the event.

Senior Lecturer Sithumini Rathnamalala of the University of Moratuwa, Musician Gayathri Khemadasa, and Assistant Lecturer Sakeef Sam commented on the film. Director Nadya Perera and cinematographer Mahinda Abeysinghe also participated in the film conversation. Senior Lecturer Samanthika Priyadarshani moderated the conversation.

The KOICA OBA 3 volunteer team met the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya

The KOICA OBA 3 volunteer team met Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya on the 8th of February 2024 at the Vice Chancellors’ Office in the university. The team included Hyewon Kang (Secretory-General), Sehee Kim (Vice-Secretory), Geonho Kim (Member), Jinwoo Lee (Member), Sieun Yang (Member), and Dr. Sulochani Ramanayake of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Model United Nations, or Model UN or MUN, is an educational model of the United Nations used for simulations in which students learn about diplomacy and international relations. The KOICA volunteer team came to Sri Lanka to initiate this MUN project in Sri Lanka. They have selected the University of Kelaniya to conduct this global educational program. 3TMUN (Talk Talk Talk Model United Nations) is their project name in Sri Lanka, and it aims to improve the global citizenship capacity of all those who participate in this event directly and indirectly. The theme of this conference was “Global Efforts to Regulate Carbon Emission”. Before the final conference debate, they conducted several educational and training programs (an Orientation and a Workshop) at the University of Kelaniya premises. They selected not only the Faculty of Social Sciences but also the Korean Unit of the Department of Modern Languages for the OBA 3 final debate. The final OBA 3 conference was held on the 5th of February at Cinnamon Grand Hotel Colombo.

Inauguration Ceremony of Higher Diploma in Communication and Public Relations

The inauguration ceremony of the 5th intake of Higher Diploma in Communication and Public Relations was ceremoniously held on the 7th of January 2024 at the Social Sciences Auditorium, University of Kelaniya.

Dr. Ravi Liyanage, Co-Founder, and Chairman/CEO of the Raigam Group was the Chief Guest of the ceremony and delivered the keynote speech.

Department of Philosophy Celebrates Thai Pongal

The Association of Philosophy under the Department of Philosophy organized a Thai Pongal Day Celebration on 23rd January 2024 at “Mee Amba Sewana” of the University of Kelaniya. The event was organized to raise awareness about the diversity of cultures and to motivate students to discover different cultures and their values.
