Special Guest Lecture on “Why Masculinity?: Exploring Men, Desire, and UK Sex Clubs”

A special guest lecture on “Why Masculinity?: Exploring Men, Desire, and UK Sex Clubs,” organized by the Research Centre for Social Sciences, was held on the 06th of November 2024 at the Board Room of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The main objective of conducting this lecture was to create dialogue on research works.

The lecture was conducted by Dr. Chris Haywood, Reader in Critical Masculinity Studies at the Department of Media, Culture and Heritage in the School of Arts and Cultures, Newcastle University, who graced the event as the Chief Guest. The event was also honoured by the presence of Professor A. G. Amarasinghe of the Department of Geography, University of Kelaniya, as an Honourable Guest. 

The lecture was attended by members of academic staff representing all the departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences, researchers, and students. See More

Official Launching of the Book Titled "Amara Samarcaṇā: J.A. Amaraweera Commemoration Volume"

The book titled "Amara Samarcaṇā: J.A. Amaraweera Commemoration Volume," a tribute to the life and contributions of J.A. Amaraweera, a leading professional in the field of Library and Information Science in Sri Lanka, was officially launched by the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya, on the 6th of November 2024, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences. 

This Commemoration Volume consisted of articles devoted to vivid areas of librarianship compiled by scholars and professionals.

Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, graced the event as the Chief Guest. Professor Most Venerable Neluwe Sumanawansha Thero, Vice Chancellor of the Sri Lanka Buddhist and Pali University, and Professor M. M. Gunathilaka, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences were the Guests of Honor of the event. 

Senior Professor W. A. Weerasooriya of the Department of Library and Information Science delivered the keynote address, reflecting on Mr. Amaraweera’s immense contributions to the field and his enduring legacy. Senior Professor M. K. Weerasinghe, Head of the Department of Library and Information Science, officially opened the ceremony with a welcome speech. Professor Weerasinghe highlighted Mr. Amaraweera’s significant role as a visiting lecturer and mentor to countless students, shaping the development of Library and Information Science at the University of Kelaniya and beyond. 

A key highlight of the event was the expression of appreciation with thanks by Venerable Bopeththe Somananda Thero, Lecturer in the Department of Library and Information Science, as the Chief Editor of the commemoration volume. In his remarks, Venerable Somananda Thero acknowledged the collective effort that contributed to producing the commemoration volume, serving both a tribute to Mr. Amaraweera’s contributions and as a valuable resourceful work for reading. He also expressed gratitude to the family of Mr. Amaraweera, particularly his wife and daughter-in-law, who took part in the ceremony. 

The event also brought together heads of departments, academic staff from both the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, authors, professionals, and practitioners in the field of Library and Information Science in Sri Lanka. Many of the academic staff members and the students of the Department of Library and Information Science who attended were the disciples of Mr. Amaraweera. See More

Diploma Awarding Ceremony by the Department of Library and Information Science

The Department of Library and Information Science of the University of Kelaniya proudly hosted a ceremony to award diplomas and certificated to its students on the 13th of October 2024 at the Main Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The programs offered by the department include the Diploma in Library and Information Science, the Diploma in Information Management and Technology, and the Higher Diploma in Library and Information Science.

Prof. M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, graced the event as the Chief Guest, while the other distinguished guests included Senior Prof. M. K. Weerasinghe, Head of the Department of Library and Information Science, and Dr. Patrick McNamara, Executive Director of the United States-Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission.

Dr. McNamara delivered the keynote address at the ceremony, sharing his insights on the importance of library and information science in today's world.

A total of 160 students received their diplomas and certificates at the event. Additionally, the event witnessed the participation of the academic and non-academic staff of the Department of Library and Information Science. See more

 

"Suvātrā" Health Camp

The "Suvātrā" Health Camp, organized by the 5th batch of the Higher Diploma in Communication & Public Relations of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya, was held on the 19th of October, at the Lassakanda Sri Samantabhadrarama Temple in Eratne, Ratnapura.

This camp was conducted in collaboration with several key institutions, including the Divisional Secretariat, Kuruwita; Medical Officer of Health (MOH) Office, Kuruwita; Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society; Cipla Sri Lanka, and HelpAge Sri Lanka.

The health camp offered a range of free clinical services, such as eye tests, distribution of spectacles, coordination of the provision of contact lenses for eight selected individuals, blood sugar tests, cholesterol checks, lung function tests, and more.

The camp witnessed the participation of many heads of various institutions as well as the academic staff of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya.

Furthermore, the camp was attended by nearly a thousand residents from the villages of Lassakanda, Adavikanda, Eratne and Sudhagala. See more

University of Kelaniya Pioneers Climate Solutions with International Collaboration

The University of Kelaniya held a landmark event as part of the Climate Change Accelerator program, marking a significant step forward in student-led climate innovation. The event was organized by the Department of Geography, University of Kelaniya, in collaboration with the U.S. Consulate and Seeds of Peace, and was held on the 14th of October 2024, at the Board Room of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The Climate Change Accelerator, in partnership with the U.S. Department of State, empowers students to take the lead in addressing climate issues across South Asia. At the event, two teams from the Department of Geography presented their innovative project proposals aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change. Both teams have been secured cash awards of $200 to initiate their projects, positioning them as key players in the university’s climate initiatives.

Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, honoured the event as the Chief Guest. Moreover, the event welcomed an esteemed delegation, including Ms. Zahra Hajyani, Public Engagement Specialist at the U.S. Consulate in Karachi; Mr. Qasim Aslam, Project Director of the South and Southeast Asia Climate Change Accelerator (SSCCA); Ms. Shweta Patole, Senior Program Manager at Seeds of Peace; and Mr. Priyank Badola, Senior Program Coordinator at Seeds of Peace.

One of the highlights of the day was the formal handover of a biogas plant developed by Team Reclaim, symbolizing the practical contributions of students toward sustainability. This biogas plant project is a testament to the university’s commitment to fostering a green campus and driving innovation through hands-on learning. After the program, the delegation team visited the biogas plant located on the university premises, witnessing firsthand the impact of student-driven sustainability initiatives.

Additionally, the event was graced by the participation of Senior Professor Lal Mervin Dharmasiri, Head of the Department of Geography; Professor A. G. Amarasinghe; Dr. Saseeka Wijesakara; Dr. Pansujee Dissanayake, Deputy Director of the Center for Sustainability Solutions; Mr. K. K. K. Darmathilake, Registrar of the university; and staff members of the Department of Geography. The program was hosted by the university coordinator for this program, Lecturer Indunil Ranwella.

With lively discussions between international delegates, faculty, and students, the event provided a valuable platform for sharing ideas and collaborating on solutions to one of the most pressing global challenges - climate change. See More
