The Association of Philosophy under the Department of Philosophy organized a Thai Pongal Day Celebration on 23^rd January 2024 at “Mee Amba Sewana” of the University of Kelaniya. The event was organized to raise awareness about the diversity of cultures and to motivate students to discover different cultures and their values.

Professor D. M. Semasinghe, Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Dr. Sudath Senarath, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Heads of the Departments, Academic and Non-Academic Staff members of the Department of Philosophy and Students graced the event.

In a testament to their exemplary contributions to the field of Geography, Professor Lal Mervin Dharmasiri, Senior Professor, Chair and Head of the Department of Geography, and Professor A.G. Amarasinghe, Director of the Research Center for Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, were recently recognized and honored during their participation in various academic programs in India. The eminent professors took part in the 6^th World Congress on Disaster Management (WCDM), held in Dehradun, India, on November 28, 2023.

The Congress, themed “Strengthening Climate Action & Disaster Resilience,” brought together experts from around the globe to discuss crucial issues related to disaster management and climate change.

Professor Lal Mervin Dharmasiri, a distinguished alumnus of Pune University in India, delivered a keynote speech at the International Conference on Conservation and Management of Natural Resources for Sustainable Development. The conference, hosted by K.B. Patil University College and affiliated with P.A.H. Solapur University, Maharashtra, India, took place on December 3, 2023. His insightful address highlighted the importance of sustainable practices in natural resource management.

Adding another feather to his cap, Professor Dharmasiri was also invited as a guest of honor for the 75^th Anniversary celebrations of Savitribai Phule Pune University. The Department of Geography, in collaboration with the National Association of Geographers, India (NAGI), organized an international conference in December 2023 as part of the university’s Diamond Jubilee.

Notably, Professor Dharmasiri’s outstanding achievements were further underscored as he was recognized as one of the best PhD products of Pune University - India. The Board of Studies, Geography, University of Pune, bestowed this prestigious honor upon him, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the field. These accolades not only bring pride to the University of Kelaniya but also highlight the university’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and global collaborations in the field of Geography. The professors’ participation in these international events not only showcases their expertise but also contributes to the advancement of knowledge in the global academic community.

A workshop organized for Piriven Librarians by the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya, and the Division of Piriven Education, Ministry of Education, was held successfully on 21^st December 2023 at the Auditorium of the Staff Development Unit, University of Kelaniya.

The objective of the workshop was awareness on “Sharing knowledge about library management and their services among the Piriven Librarians”.

Senior Professor M. K. Weerasinghe, Dr. Priyanwada Wanigasooriya, Dr. Niluka Harshani, Senior Lecturer Ms. Nadeeka Rathnabahu, Lecturer Mr. Shanaka Ransara and Mr. Sarath Nanda Kumara (Director, National Institute of Education) were the resource persons of the workshop.

The National Media Summit organized by the Department of Mass Communication in collaboration with the India-Sri Lanka Foundation was held on 14th and 15th December 2023 at the University of Kelaniya.

The inauguration ceremony was on 14th December in the Faculty Board Room of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the event was organized to share knowledge and experience between India and Sri Lanka in the field of Communication and Media Studies. There were six-panel sessions organized on related topics for the two days of the summit.

Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, graced the event as the Chief Guest. Professor Manukonda Rabindranath, the Chairperson of the Center for Media Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, India, and Dr. Archana Kumari, Jawaharlal Nehru University, India were the special guests of the summit. Academics in Communication and Media Studies of higher education institutions in Sri Lanka also participated in the event. See more
