"NETHTHRA" SCHOOL LIBRARY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
A bulk of book donation to schools in North Western Province under “NETHRA Program”
Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya has launched a continuing programme of donating books and stationeries to underprivileged schools carefully selected with the full consultation of Provincial Directors of Education in each province of Sri Lanka. The name of this program is NETHRA and it is carried out with the help of local and foreign donors. Already, two such programmes were successfully conducted in two provinces in Sri Lanka, first one in Sabaragamuwa and the other in North Central Province.
The third book donation function was held at Palaviya Maha Vidyalaya in Putthalam in North Western Province on 25 May 2023. This event was organized in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Department of Library and Information Science. Books and school stationeries were donated for 35 schools including 4 Pirivenas. Senior Professor M.K. Weerasinghe, Head of Department, Senior Lecturer Mr. Tikiri Gunatilaka and all the academic staff of the Department and Mr. R.A.H.M. Arjun Director of Divisional Education Putthalam District and Mr. E.A.W. Bandara Director of Assistant Education, Library Putthalam District joined the event.
