Wimal Dissanayake is a leading scholar of Asian cinema. He has published a large number of books on the subject including, Melodrama and Asian Cinema (Cambridge University Press), New Chinese Cinema (Oxford University Press), Colonialism and Nationalism in Asian Cinema (Indiana University Press), and Indian Popular Cinema (Trentham Publishers). Prof. Dissanayake has also published widely in areas of communication and cultural Studies, including such books as Global/Local (Duke University Press) and Narratives of Agency (Minnesota University Press), Transcultural Pacific (University of Illinois Press. He was the founding editor of the East-West Film Journal, and has served as editorial advisor to such prestigious publications as International Encyclopedia of Communication, Journal of Communication, Communication Theory, Framework, Deep Focus, World Englishes, Journal of South Asian Popular Culture. He is regarded as a pioneer in the field of Asian communication theory. He is the general editor of a book series on Hong Kong cinema for the Hong Kong University Press.

Wimal Dissanayake is also a bilingual poet; he publishes poetry in his mother tongue, Sinhalese and in English. He was awarded the Publishers Prize for the outstanding book of poetry in Sri Lanka and has published English poetry in such journals as Hawaii Review, Kaimaana, Bamboo Ridge, Cambridge Review and Pawn. He has been living in Hawaii for the past twenty five years.

මහනුවර ත්‍රිත්ව විද්‍යාලයෙන් මූලික අධ්‍යාපනය ලබා එවකට ශ්‍රී ලංකා විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයට ඇතුළත්ව සිංහල පිළිබඳ ගෞරව උපාධිය හිමිකරගත් මහාචාර්ය විමල් දිසානායක මහතා පේරාදෙණිය ගුරුකුලයෙන් බිහි වූ ස්වාධීන බුද්ධිමතෙකු ලෙස සැලැකිය හැකිය. සිය ප්‍රථම උපාධිය සඳහා එතුමා විෂයන් ලෙස තෝරා ගත්තේ සිංහල, සංස්කෘත හා ඉංග්‍රීසි යන භාෂා ත්‍රිත්වයයි. ඉන්පසු එංගලන්තයේ කේම්බ්‍රිජ් විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයට ඇතුළත්ව ආචාර්ය උපාධිය ලබා ගත්තේ ඉංග්‍රීසි සාහිත්‍යය විෂයය කරගනිමිනි. ඉන්පසුව 1975 දී අධි ශිෂ්‍යත්වයක් ලැබ පෙන්සිල්වේනියා සරසවියෙන් පශ්චාත් ආචාර්ය උපාධිය ලබා ගන්නේ ජන සන්නිවේදනය හා සිනමාව විෂයය කරගනිමිනි. මෙරට සන්නිවේදන විෂයයෙහි පුරෝගාමී විද්වතුන් වූ විමල් දිසානායක මහතා කැලණිය විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයේ ජන සන්නිවේදන අධ්‍යනාංශයේ  පළමු අංශාධිපතිවරයා වශයෙන්  කටයුතු කළ අතර 1979 දී ඇමරිකාවේ හවායි විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයට පත් වීමක් ලැබ විදේශගත විය. එතුමා දැනට එහි ජන සන්නිවේදනය පිළිබඳ මහාචාර්යවරයා මෙන්ම හොංකොං විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ සම්මාන මහාචාර්ය පදවියක් ද උසුලනු ලැබේ. මේ වන විට සිංහල මහාචාර්යවරයකු මෙන්ම ඉංග්‍රීසි මහාචාර්යවරයකු වශයෙන් කටයුතු කිරීමේ දුර්ලභ භාග්‍ය හිමිකරගත් එකම ශ්‍රී ලාංකික විද්වතා වන්නේ ඔහුය. සන්නිවේදනය, විත්‍රපට වේදය, සංස්කෘතික අධ්‍යයනය, මාධ්‍ය අධ්‍යයනය, පශ්චාත්නව්‍යවාදය වැනි විවිධ විෂයය කේෂත්‍රයන් අලලා ඔහු විසින් ඉංග්‍රීසි හා සිංහල භාෂාවෙන් රචිත කෘති 40 කට අධිකය.
