The national conference “Becoming a Man in Sri Lanka: Understanding Post-Compulsory Education Trajectories” was held on March 26, 2025, at the University of Kelaniya, organized by its Department of Mass Communication in collaboration with Newcastle University, UK, and the British Academy.
The conference Chaired by Dr. Achala Abeykoon, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya, the event featured insightful speeches delivered by Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, and Professor M. M. Gunathilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Dr. Chris Haywood, Reader in Critical Masculinity Studies at Newcastle University, UK, and Dr. Manjo Jimadasa, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya graced the event as the keynote speakers, while other guest speakers included Dr. Sujatha Gamage, an Education Policy Expert; Prof. Nirmal Devasiri, a Professor in History; and Dr. Rohan Pethiyagoda, a Biodiversity Scientist.

An MoU was signed between the University of Kelaniya and the Public Relations Association of Sri Lanka (PRASL) on 14th March 2025 at the Vice Chancellor's office.

 

The primary objective of this MoU is to recognize and harness mutual opportunities between the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Kelaniya and PRASL. This collaboration is expected to contribute significantly to the development of public relations education, enhance the knowledge base of the discipline, and foster professional growth within the PR industry in Sri Lanka.

 

Present at the occasion were Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Professor M. M. Gunathilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Senior Lecturer Wijayananda Rupasinghe, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Senior Lecturer Dr. Manoj Jinadasa, Lecturer (Probationary) Dasini I Madurasinghe, Subject Coordinator of PRMM degree program, Mr. Mushthak Ahamed, President of PRASL, Mr. Ashan Kumar, Vice President of PRASL, Mr. Ashan Jayatilaka, Secretary, of PRASL, Ms. Rezani Aziz, Director of PRASL.

The  first issue of year 2024 of the “Sri Lanka Journal of Communication,” the English language biannual double-blind reviewed academic journal, published by the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya, was presented to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, and the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor M. M. Gunathilaka, on the 1st of January 2025.

The Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Senior Lecturer Wijayananda Rupasinghe, Chief Editor Senior Lecturer Dr. Aruna Lokuliyana, Assistant Editors Lecturer Ileka Ruwanpathirana and Probationary Lecturer Dasini I Madurasinghe, and the Junior Research Fellow Dimuthu Jinasena who contributed as the page layout designer for the journal were present on this occasion.
