2024 Luojia Global Summer School organized by Wuhan University was held from 23rd June to 26th July focusing the effective application of sustainable development goals. This international initiative brought together students from eight countries. Students from China, Sri Lanka, Laos, Fiji, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, United States of America and Ecuador came together and shared their own stories and struggles concerning SDG.
The course content was well planned with modern day SDG knowledge. The lecturers on different disciplines around the world shared their insight on mindful communication, storytelling and story selling and many more practical case studies. Field visits to conservation sites, urban greening factories and news agencies provided the students with balanced understanding on various aspects of the topic. And classroom discussions and presentations encouraged students to find solutions to common problems they face through international collaboration.
Cultural events planned by the university and students from different countries, created a platform for students to share and understand other cultures and to find their own identity. Cultural integration was a major focus in the course with many lectures focusing on better collaboration of government initiatives and cultural sensitive reporting.
Professor Ji Li from the Journalism and Communication Department of Wuhan University and Dr. Kalinga Senaviratne who was a major contributor in the program plan to set up a website for these students to continue reporting on their issues and measures taken for SDG in their countries. On 26th of July the program concluded successfully.
The "Suvātrā" Health Camp, organized by the 5th batch of the Higher Diploma in Communication & Public Relations of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya, was held recently (19th of October), at the Lassakanda Sri Samantabhadrarama Temple in Eratne, Ratnapura.
This camp was conducted in collaboration with several key institutions, including the Divisional Secretariat, Kuruwita; Medical Officer of Health (MOH) Office, Kuruwita; Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society; Cipla Sri Lanka, and HelpAge Sri Lanka.
The health camp offered a range of free clinical services, such as eye tests, distribution of spectacles, coordination of the provision of contact lenses for eight selected individuals, blood sugar tests, cholesterol checks, lung function tests, and more.
The camp witnessed the participation of many heads of various institutions as well as the academic staff of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya.
Furthermore, the camp was attended by nearly a thousand residents from the villages of Lassakanda, Adavikanda, Eratne and Sudhagala.
The Undergraduate Research Symposium of Social Sciences (URSS) 2024, organized by the Research Centre for Social Sciences (RCSS), University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on the August 30, 2024 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Kelaniya. This year’s symposium focused on the theme “Ensuring Sustainable Development through the Power of Social Sciences”.
The event was graced by the participation of Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, as the Guest of Honour, while Prof. M.M. Gunathilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences graced the event as the Conference Chair.An insightful keynote address was delivered by Prof. K. Karunathilake, Cadre Chair and Senior Professor of the Department of Sociology, University of Kelaniya, during the event. Present at the occasion were Dr. Sudath Senarath, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; Prof. A. G. Amarasinghe, Director of the RCSS; Dr. K.R.N. Harshani, Conference Secretary of the URSS, all the heads of the departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences, professors and all the lecturers of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the research presenters.
Representing the Department of Mass Communication, 35 undergraduates from both Mass Communication and Public Relations & Media Management presented their research findings across seven technical sessions spanning seven tracks.
The sixth phase of the marketing guest lecture series, centered on the subject of Marketing (MACO 33454), took place on Friday, April 5th, 2024, at 01:00 PM in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
Mr. Amitha Amarasinghe, the CEO and Co-founder of APIDM, delivered an interesting lecture under the theme "Impact of AI in Marketing and Communications Industry," focusing on how Artificial Intelligence is revolutionizing the marketing and communications landscape.
