The Annual General Meeting of the Students' Association of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya, took place on August 4th, 2025, at the K-204 Hall, Faculty of Social Sciences.
The event was held in the presence of Senior Lecturer Dr. Manoj Jinadasa, Head of the Department, Senior Lecturer Dr. Mangala Pasqual, Subject Coordinator, and Senior Treasurer of the Students' Association, along with the entire academic staff.
The new board was appointed, and the contributions of the previous board were appreciated. Warm congratulations to the newly appointed officers, with best wishes for a successful term ahead.
“Sannasa 2025,” the cultural show organized by the second-year students of the BA Honours in Public Relations and Media Management degree programme offered by the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on 6 January 2026 at the Sri Dharmaloka Hall of the University. Held under the theme “Tracing the Journey of Sri Lankan Public Relations,” the event was organized in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the BA Honours in Public Relations and Media Management degree programme at the University of Kelaniya.
The main objectives of the event were to celebrate a decade of the degree programme and to raise social and student awareness of the field of public relations.
The event was colourful, with the full support and contributions of all departments and the Arts Council of the University of Kelaniya. The programme featured a variety of performances that creatively showcased the evolution of public relations and highlighted its contemporary significance.
The event was graced by Professor Uda Hettige, Chairman of the Arts Council; Dr Manoj Jinadasa, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Mass Communication; Senior Lecturer Saman Rajapaksha, Director of the Communication and Media Unit; members of the academic staff of the Department of Mass Communication; and students of the University of Kelaniya.
A scholarly discussion on the film “Walampoori: Seven and Half Dreams”, organized by the first-year undergraduates of the BA (Hons) in Mass Communication Degree Programme offered by the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on 07th August 2025 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
The event was graced by the presence of Mr. Lakmal Dharmarathna, Director of the film; Dr. Aruna Lokuliyana and Ms. Samanthika Priyadarshani, Senior Lecturers of the Department of Mass Communication; and Mr. Priyantha Sirikumara and Mr. Anjana Premarathna, actors in the film.
The discussion was moderated by Senior Lecturer Dr. Mangala Keerthi Pasqual of the Department of Mass Communication. Additionally, Senior Lecturer Saman Rajapaksha, Acting Head of the Department of Mass Communication; academic staff members; and students, attended the event.
The Public Relations and Media Management Students' Association of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Kelaniya, successfully organized the 'AI for Future Career Development' workshop on April 1st, 2025, at the Social Sciences Faculty Auditorium. The workshop was organized to provide insights on using AI technology to develop a future career for undergraduates at the Department of Mass Communication. This initiative was the third workshop of a broader workshop series aimed at enhancing the professional competencies of Public Relations and Media Management students.
The event featured two distinguished resource persons specializing in AI-driven career paths. Mr. K. D. Jayakody, a Software Engineer and Content Creator, led the first session on 'Using AI for Educational Purposes, offering valuable insights into AI's role in academic and professional learning. Mr. Kalana Sugeeshwara, a social media content creator and freelance graphic designer, conducted the second session, 'AI-Assisted Content Creation for Social Media,' sharing practical applications of AI in digital content development.
The workshop was attended by undergraduates from the department, along with lecturers from the Public Relations and Media Management degree program were presented at this workshop. The engaging sessions provided students with firsthand knowledge and industry perspectives on integrating AI into their future careers.
This initiative underscores the Department of Mass Communication's commitment to preparing students for the evolving digital landscape, ensuring they remain competitive in an AI-driven job market.
