The 50th-anniversary celebration of the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Kelaniya and the inauguration of the Sanjanani Communication and Public Relations Festival took place successfully on October 3, 2023, at the Social Sciences Auditorium.

During the event, the Harasara Award was presented, with Dr. Sarath Amunugama receiving recognition for his contributions to the media industry. A special commemorative cover and stamp were issued to mark the 50th anniversary . Additionally, scholarly publications Sannivedana and the 9th and 10th volumes of Madhya Vimarshฤซ were launched, and Prof. Shelton Gunaratne Memorial Scholarships were awarded to high-achieving students pursuing honors degrees. A tribute was organized to honor retired academic staff members who had made significant contributions to the department.

Key attendees included Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, who served as the chief guest, and Dr. Sarath Amunugama, who was the Guest of Honor. Deans of the Faculties, Heads of the Departments, academic and non-academic staff, as well as students from the Department of Mass Communication, were also present.

The inauguration ceremony of the Diploma courses (Diploma in Mass Communication and Diploma in Public Relations & Media Management) took place on 06th August 2023, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya. The event was organized by the Department of Mass Communication to celebrate the commencement of the two diploma courses and warmly welcome the new batches of students.

The occasion was graced by Prof. MM Gunatilake, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, who served as the Chief Guest. Additionally, Mr. Kanchana Dassanayake, the chief editor of Sunday Lankadeepa newspaper, was invited to be the Keynote Speaker. In his enlightening and motivational speech, Mr. Dassanayake emphasized the need of analyzing media content and learning mass communication as a subject as well as a practice.

Among the distinguished attendees were Senior Lecturer Mr. Wijayananda Rupasinghe, the Head of the Department of Mass Communication, and Senior Lecturer Mr. Aruna Lokuliyana, the former Head of the Department of Mass Communication. Also present were the two coordinators of the Diploma programs, the lecturers of the Department of Mass Communication, and the enthusiastic candidates of the Diploma courses.

This event stands as another memorable event for the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Kelaniya, as it holds particular significance for professionals in the fields of communication and media since it provides them with the opportunity to further their studies and enhance their knowledge and skills.

The inauguration ceremony of the Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Public Relations and Media Management (PRMM) course took place on July 30, 2023, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya. The event was organized by the Department of Mass Communication to celebrate the commencement of the Postgraduate Diploma in PRMM course and warmly welcome its very first batch of students.

The occasion was graced by Prof. MM Gunatilake, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, who served as the Chief Guest. Additionally, Dr. Nushad Perera, the former Chief Operating Officer of Dialog TV and the Managing Director of Ten Holdings (Sri Lanka, Malaysia) was invited to be the Keynote Speaker. In his enlightening and motivational speech, Dr. Perera emphasized the crucial role of effective communication in expressing ideas creatively across digital platforms.
