The inaugural performance of the stage drama ‘Maha Supina’ (a story depicting the famous ‘Mahasupina Jathaka Story’), directed by Prof. Ariyarathne Athugala of the Department of Mass Communication, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya was staged on the 5th of December 2017 at Sri Dharmaloka Convocation Hall of the University of Kelaniya.
The script of ‘Maha Supina’ was written by Prof. Ariyaratne Athugala and choreographed by famous dancer Mr. Ravibandu Vidyapathy while the Music was composed by veteran musician Mr. Tharupathy Munasinghe.
Several talented artists including, Mr. Buddhadasa Vithanarachchi, Ms. Madhani Malwatte, Mr. Priyankara Rathnayake, Ms. Sulochana Wickramasinghe, Mr. Janaka Ranasinghe, Mr. Saranga Disasekara, Mr. Akila Dhanuddhara and the Undergraduates of the University of Kelaniya performed in the drama by portraying numerous roles. The “Maha Supina” staged as a production work of the Arts Council of the University of Kelaniya.
‘Maha Supina’ is the outcome of an experiment that has a philosophical and political approach, based on the sixteen dreams of King Kosol and the folklore. This stage drama with a large cast of characters was completely a new experience for the spectators and for its actors as well.
Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University, Deans of faculties, Directors and Chairpersons of the University, Heads of Departments and other academic staff and many undergraduates had gathered to witness the inaugural performance of ‘Maha Supina’. In addition, a large number of renowned and veteran artists affiliated to the university and outside the University as well as many invitees participated in the event.
