The 50th-anniversary celebration of the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Kelaniya and the inauguration of the Sanjanani Communication and Public Relations Festival took place successfully on October 3, 2023, at the Social Sciences Auditorium.
During the event, the Harasara Award was presented, with Dr. Sarath Amunugama receiving recognition for his contributions to the media industry. A special commemorative cover and stamp were issued to mark the 50th anniversary . Additionally, scholarly publications Sannivedana and the 9th and 10th volumes of Madhya Vimarshī were launched, and Prof. Shelton Gunaratne Memorial Scholarships were awarded to high-achieving students pursuing honors degrees. A tribute was organized to honor retired academic staff members who had made significant contributions to the department.
Key attendees included Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, who served as the chief guest, and Dr. Sarath Amunugama, who was the Guest of Honor. Deans of the Faculties, Heads of the Departments, academic and non-academic staff, as well as students from the Department of Mass Communication, were also present.
