The Tourism Club of the University of Kelaniya celebrated World Tourism Day on the 27th of September 2024. The day highlights the global importance of tourism, its cultural, economic, and environmental contributions, and its role in promoting understanding, especially peace, and prosperity worldwide. The program for World Tourism Day typically includes:
1. Guest Lecture on Tourism and Peace
Dr. Manoji Harishchandra The Head, Department of Philosophy, delivered her speech on the theme of this year: “Tourism and Peace." Through this lecture, she tried to educate and inspire the participants about how important peace is to the development of the tourism industry of a country.
2. Journal Launching
The launch of the 1st tourism-related journal "JOURNAL OF TOURISM" by undergraduates who studied Tourism and Cultural Resource Management is likely to focus on research, case studies, or trends within the industry. It could cover topics such as sustainable tourism, new trends in the tourism industry, and tourist destinations in Sri Lanka. It could be a platform for sharing new research and promoting best practices.
3. Workshop on Table Etiquette
This workshop would focus on fine dining etiquette, an essential skill in hospitality and tourism. It would cover topics like proper table manners, cultural variations in dining customs, and professional service etiquette. This workshop was done by Mrs. Manusha Weerawardena, Consultant in Etiquette and Grooming, Colombo School of Etiquette.
The goal of World Tourism Day programme is to foster awareness of tourism’s importance while advocating for practices that ensure sustainable and equitable growth.
